Have a Good Day

I was in the drive-thru of the SIU Credit Union yesterday and today.  It is a pleasant place to visit and see fellow human beings, through glass.  The staff at the Credit Union has always been friendly…but in the midst of our 2020 pandemic…I am noticing it more.  Their kind greeting when I pull up, and the, heartfelt, have a good day…is music to my ears!  As I am pulling away from my bank, I think to myself, what lovely people!  And, I feel like having a good day.

I am continually impressed with, Jonathon and my friend, Emily, the owner of Mainstreet Books in St. Charles, Missouri.  I have always loved books, and independent bookstores.  We have been buying some books, and puzzles.  MJ is working on the Celestial Map…as I write this.  Emily, not only sends the nicest post cards with our orders…but recently enclosed a Main Street coffee mug for each of us, in our last order.  It is a pleasure to do business with someone who appreciates it…and makes you feel that your patronage matters.

I had the opportunity to visit with my friend, of over 20 years, Elizabeth, yesterday.  She is an outstanding person, and one of the hardest workers that I have ever known.  Not long ago she concluded her university course work…and graduates this month.  I am exceedingly proud of her…and her many accomplishments….And honored that she and her, wonderful husband, Ryan, are my friends!

‘If you are looking for verses with which to support slavery,

You will find them.  If you are looking for verses with which to

Abolish slavery, you will find them.  If you are looking for verses

With which to oppress women, you will find them.  If you are

looking for verses with which to liberate or to honor women,

You will find them.  If you are looking for reasons to wage war,

You will find them.  If you are looking for reasons to promote peace, you will find them.

If you are looking for an outdated irrelevant ancient text, you will find it.  If you are looking for truth, believe me, you will find it.  This is why there are times when the most instructive question to bring to the text is not ‘what does it say?’ , but, ‘what am I looking for?’  I suspect Jesus knew this when he said, ‘ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened.’  If you want to do violence in this world, you will always find the weapon.  If you want to heal, you will always find the balm.’    Rachel Held Evans

Many times I have been angry and marginalized… and felt retaliation rise up in me…but , instead, chose forgiveness and kindness… and to seek more love than hate.  It has made me a happy person.
